Schneider Statement on House Passing $2000 Direct Assistance, Veto Override on Ndaa

Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) issued the below statement following the House of Representatives voting to pass the CASH Act and to override the President's veto of the National Defense Authorization Act:

"The House of Representatives passing the CASH Act tonight moves forward economic relief for struggling American families that should have been passed and sent out months ago. And the veto override shows that the NDAA, which has passed with bipartisan support and the President's signature every year for 59 years, will this year have to become law without the President's name attached.

"The fate of both these bills now lies with Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, who will decide first if he is willing to help struggling Americans and drive our economic recovery from Covid, and second if he is committed to funding America's troops.

"Because of Senate intransigence, the compromise Covid relief bill the President signed into law fell short when it came to getting desperately needed support directly to Americans. Today's CASH Act will lend a hand to those who have been hammered by this pandemic by raising direct checks from $600 to $2000. It's a morally necessary step that I hope we will build upon in the next Congress.

"Today's vote of 322-87 to override the President's veto of the NDAA was an overwhelming statement of support for those keeping us safe at home and abroad -- both this holiday season and throughout the year. It was reckless when the President chose to veto this bill, which has passed the House every year for the last 59 years, and I'm thrilled that we have been able to reverse that decision. This year's defense authorization bill provides our nation's service members with the resources they need to succeed and upholds the values of our nation with investments in supporting veterans transitioning home and fighting domestic terror."
