Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today introduced the Brian McDaniel Helicopter Safety Act, a bill to improve helicopter safety for commercial tour operators. The bill is named after a Dallas firefighter who lost his life, along with four others in a helicopter crash in New York in 2018.
"This bill will make commercial helicopter tours safer and prevent tragedies like the one that killed Brian McDaniel and four others," said Allred. "I look forward to working with Republicans and Democrats on the Transportation Committee to ensure America's airways remain among the safest in the world."
The legislation will require the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to enforce the use of safety management systems for commercial tour operators and to follow more stringent safety measures. After the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board issued recommendations which this bill codifies into law.
