Wilson Calls to Designate Iranian-Backed Militia as Terrorist Organization

Press Release

Date: Dec. 3, 2020
Issues: Defense

On December 3, Congressman Joe Wilson, Ranking Member of the Middle East, North Africa, and International Terrorism Subcommittee of the Hosue Foreign Affairs Committee and Chairman of the Republican Study Committee's (RSC) Foreign Affairs and National Security Task Force introduced the Badr Organization Designation Act of 2020 to designate the Badr Organization in Iraq, an Iranian-backed militia, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

"Badr is Iran's oldest proxy in Iraq and has the blood of Americans, Iraqis, Syrians, and Lebanese on its hands. Not only was it commanded and funded by Qassem Soleimani, the terrorist leader of Iran's revolutionary guard who President Trump heroically eliminated from the battlefield earlier this year, it also spearheaded and led the terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad almost one full year ago," said Congressman Wilson. "Badr works directly with Lebanese Hezbollah, Iraqi Kataib Hezbollah, AAH, and many other designated terrorist organizations to push forward its campaign of terror. Unfortunately, Badr has still not been designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. It is absolutely necessary if we are to truly have maximum pressure on Iran that Badr is designated as a terrorist organization. This legislation would do just that and I urge the State Department to designate Badr before the one-year anniversary of the attack."
