Crapo, Colleagues Re-introduce Constitutional Amendment to Keep Scotus at Nine Justices

U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) joined Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) and others to reintroduce a constitutional amendment that would limit the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) to nine justices. Senators Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee), Todd Young (R-Indiana), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Pat Toomey (R-Pennsylvania), Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia), Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina), Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) also co-sponsored the constitutional amendment, which was first introduced on March 25, 2019. The Supreme Court has had nine seats since 1869.

"The Supreme Court plays a vital role in safeguarding the United States Constitution, and has done so in a nonpartisan manner with nine members for more than 150 years," said Senator Crapo. "Packing the Supreme Court and increasing its size would give way to more partisan infiltration for many generations to come and would present greater and unnecessary volatile challenges in fairly and constitutionally settling the most pressing judicial cases affecting Americans. I urge President Biden to protect our nation's constitutional checks and balances and keep the seats at the current number."
