Quigley Statement on Biden Executive Orders

Statement

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement after Joe Biden signed more than a dozen executive orders to confront the coronavirus pandemic head-on, lead the fight against the climate crisis, and rollback President Trump's most harmful policies:

"When President Biden said, "help is on the way,' he meant it. The Biden administration wasted no time getting to work for the American people and providing our nation with much-needed leadership.

"For the past year, the Trump administration has summarily failed to provide the public with a strong framework for our fight against COVID-19. On day one, President Biden has signed a mask and social distancing mandate for federal property and initiated a 100-day mask challenge. The power of leading by example -- or failing to lead by example -- has been on full display during the pandemic and with the new White House leading the way, I am confident that we can change the course of this pandemic.

"As a life-long champion for the environment, I am particularly thrilled that President Biden signed an executive order to begin the process of re-entering the United States into the Paris Climate Agreement. Our future requires a nationwide commitment to addressing the climate crisis. Rejoining the Paris Agreement is the first step in that process.

"Critically, President Biden has also put an end to some of the Trump administration's most damaging policies. By committing to reunite all separated immigrant families, reinstating DACA, and ending the Muslim ban, we finally see an end to the relentless assault on immigrant communities of the past four years.

"These actions are momentous, but they are just the beginning. Congressional Democrats and I are ready to support these executive orders through legislative action. I look forward to the House and Senate following President Biden's lead."
