Bill Johnson Statement on 25th Amendment & Impeachment Votes

Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement on the House of Representatives upcoming vote on a resolution regarding the 25th Amendment and fast-track impeachment charges scheduled for a vote later this week:

Tonight, the House of Representatives will vote on a resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove the duly elected President of the United States. Simply put, this current situation is not what the 25th Amendment was designed for. I will vote no.

America is deeply divided. The events of last week's riots at our nation's capital, as well as the riots and violence that have rocked American cities across the country over this last year testify to that. These riots were horrific and heartbreaking, and every single person who broke the law should absolutely be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It should never happen again.

Today, America needs a chance to begin healing. America needs a break from the riots, the violence, and the vitriol political rhetoric that is encouraging this toxic environment. A 25th Amendment measure or impeachment will do nothing to help America heal, but will certainly widen the division. And, to intentionally further alienate tens of millions of Americans with raw nerves who already feel alienated economically and culturally by America's political, corporate, academic, and media elites is both reckless and potentially further destabilizing.

I urge House and Senate leaders to stop the political showboating, let the smooth transition of power complete next week, and let's get back to work doing the work the American people rightfully expect us to do…and, that work is to represent them.
