Waltz Statement on Election Interference Briefing

Statement

Date: Oct. 30, 2020
Location: Daytona Beach, FL
Issues: Elections

U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) issued the following statement on Friday after the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security provided a briefing to Florida's congressional delegation on foreign interference in the 2020 election:

"After hearing reports of intimidating emails sent in my own district, today's briefing was very welcomed and confirmed that the National Security community is fully committed to working with federal, state and local officials to protect voters from foreign interference," Waltz said. "Floridians should be confident in the security of this election."

Last week, Waltz and Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) requested a briefing with the Intelligence Community after last week's FBI announcement that Iran and Russia have actively interfered in the 2020 election. Voters in Waltz's district received some of the threatening emails, which the FBI indicated had originated in Iran.

"Hostile foreign actors will undoubtedly continue trying to undermine our elections by sowing discord and disinformation, which is precisely why I'll continue working with the Director of National Intelligence, FBI, DHS and DOJ to protect voters and impose costs on our adversaries," said Waltz. "There must be serious consequences for Iran, Russia, China or anyone else attacking our republic."
