Diaz-Balart Secures $1 Million for FGCU in Defense Spending Bill

WASHINGTON— Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) today announced that he secured $1 million for Florida Gulf Coast University in the Department of Defense spending package.

The $1 million will help fund research at the Florida Gulf Coast University in Next Generation Dual Use Bio-defense Technologies for the detection of and protection from bioterrorism threats and capabilities needed for civilian first responders who protect us from potential biological threats, and provide new detection capabilities that are simple, rapid, reliable, and accurate.

"This is an important project that benefits the military and first responders in handling bioterrorism threats," Diaz-Balart said. "This project was included in last year's defense spending package and clearly this project's critical research remains a priority."
