Statement

Date: Dec. 8, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Butterfield released the following statement on President-Elect Joe Biden's decision to nominate retired General Lloyd J. Austin, III to serve our Nation as Secretary of Defense:

"I applaud President-Elect Joe Biden's selection of General Lloyd J. Austin, III to serve as Secretary of Defense for the United States of America. General Austin is well qualified to serve in this most important position. His years of command leadership and commitment to our Nation's defense are unparalleled.

General Austin and his wife, Charlene, are family friends of many years. Mrs. Austin's parents were my neighbors in Wilson, North Carolina. General and Mrs. Austin have been a perfect example of a military family who unselfishly serve our Nation.

I look forward to a fair and expedited confirmation process in the Senate of the United States."
