U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand issued the following statement in response to the passing of former New York City Mayor David Dinkins:

"Today, I join millions of New Yorkers in mourning the remarkable life of former New York City Mayor David Dinkins. A steadfast champion for the poor, Mayor Dinkins broke barriers as New York City's first Black mayor and his unwavering belief in human rights and the need for equality will continue to serve as a shining example for us all. Mayor Dinkins will be deeply missed and my prayers are with his family and friends."
