Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.), a senior member of the Committee on Education and Labor, released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Labor released a proposed rule clarifying the definitions of employees and independent contractors under the Fair Labor Standards Act:

"As the gig economy has grown in recent years, there has been much confusion over whether certain workers should be classified as employees or independent contractors. The DOL's proposed rule establishes a commonsense test, and I applaud Secretary Scalia and the Trump administration for proposing this rule. Clarifying the difference between independent contractors, or "gig workers,' and employees will help protect individuals who prefer to be their own boss and make their own schedules and will give much-needed clarity to businesses across the country."
