Chairwoman Maloney Issues Statement on Second Federal Court Order

Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued this statement following the second federal court ruling ordering the Trump Administration to extend the Census enumeration deadline to October 31, 2020 in order to get an accurate and complete count:

"Today's order reaffirms what bipartisan members of Congress have been stating: rushing the 2020 Census will result in an inaccurate and incomplete count. The Trump Administration should follow this court order and stop politicizing the 2020 Census."

Yesterday, Chairwoman Maloney demanded additional information from Dr. Steven Dillingham, Director of the United States Census Bureau, about the impact of the decision to refuse to comply with the previous federal court ruling extending the Census count to October 31, 2020.

Newly released emails from the litigation show that on September 25, 2020, Deputy Director Ron Jarmin--the highest ranking career official at the Census Bureau--sent an email to Director Dillingham and Daniel Risko, the Chief of Staff to the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Commerce, presenting two options for the Bureau to move forward: one that complied with the court order, and one that did not. The Bureau, ordered directly by Secretary Ross, decided to defy the court order.
