Steube Fights for Lake Okeechobee by Promoting Mechanical Harvesting Techniques for Controlling Invasive Species

SARASOTA, FLA. - U.S. Representatives Greg Steube (R-Fla.) and Brian Mast (R-Fla.) sent a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) advising against the use of dangerous chemicals for controlling invasive species in Lake Okeechobee and reminding the Corps of FY21 appropriations languages recommending safer alternatives, like mechanical harvesting.

"We owe it to our future generations to be good stewards of the environment and protect Florida's waterways while controlling invasive plant species in Lake Okeechobee," Steube said. "There is no need for dangerous chemicals like diquat and glyphosate when we have safer alternatives like mechanical harvesting that will protect our waterways and keep Florida's families healthy."

Steube was instrumental in getting the mechanical harvesting language included in this year's appropriations package. He also joined President Trump in Florida last month to celebrate the long list of environmental achievements Congress and the Administration have worked together to pass over the last several years.
