Hoyer Statement on Veterans Day

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Veterans Day:

"On Veterans Day, we come together as Americans to honor those who wore the uniform of our nation and put their lives and safety on the line to defend our country and its principles. We remember those lost and pay tribute to those who came home, often bringing with them the scars of war, both visible and invisible. While we may not all be able to gather in person this year to honor our veterans at parades and ceremonies, surely we join together in spirit to thank them for their service from every home and every community in America.

"This year marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, a conflict that saw America rise to the challenge of defeating fascism and defending freedom around the world. Those who fought in that conflict displayed courage and determination that will echo through our history. Now fewer in number, these special veterans continue to be a source of pride in the communities where they live and to which they continue to contribute today. I hope we can all take a moment this year to reach out to the Second World War veterans we know to thank them for their heroism - and make sure they have the resources and connections to sustain them in health and safety during this challenging time of COVID-19, especially as we see cases increasing at VA facilities.

"I am deeply proud of the work House Democrats have done over the past two years to reduce homelessness, suicide, and poverty among veterans in this country. We've worked to expand access to high-quality health care through the VA system, increase benefits to those exposed to Agent Orange, and eliminate the taxes imposed so unfairly on Gold Star families. I am also very proud that we passed the Deborah Sampson Act to improve access to health care for women veterans. I look forward to continuing to work closely with Chairman Takano and the Veterans Affairs Committee to build on this work and ensure that the House always meets its commitment to those who served under our flag."
