U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) issued the following statement after President Donald Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to serve as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court:

"I am vehemently opposed to President Trump's nomination of Amy Coney Barrett as Associate Justice to the Supreme Court, and dismayed by Senate Republicans' hypocritical rush to fill the seat less than six weeks from the 2020 Presidential Election. It is clear from Barrett's legal opinions, writings and commentary that the future of healthcare, protections for pre-existing conditions, voting rights, women's rights, and the principle that no person is above the law--not even the president--are in serious jeopardy if she is confirmed.

Also, for more than 230 days, Republicans sabotaged former President Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, citing the 2016 Election as an excuse for inaction. Now, less than 40 days until the 2020 Election, and with Trump in the White House, they are singing an entirely different tune. I urge Senate Republicans to follow their own advice: there should be no confirmation hearing until inauguration."
