BRINDISI ANNOUNCES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE CRIME PREVENTION GRANT FOR BINGHAMTON

Statement

Date: Sept. 23, 2020

Congressman Anthony Brindisi today announced $25,855 in Department of Justice (DOJ) Bureau of Justice Assistance's Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program funding for the city of Binghamton.

"Our law enforcement officers work around the clock to keep our communities and neighborhoods safe, and these dollars will help ensure they have the resources and tools they need to get the job done," said Brindisi. "As communities and police departments across Upstate New York work to maintain healthy and productive relationships, it's our job to ensure they have all the support we can give them."

The DOJ's Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program designates funds to help state and local governments prevent and control crime. Grant funds can be used for law enforcement training programs, prevention and education programs, drug treatment and enforcement programs, mental health programs and more.

In December 2019, Rep. Brindisi voted to secure $547 million for the DOJ's Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program for Fiscal Year 2020.

A staunch advocate for Upstate law enforcement officers, Brindisi recently called for the doubling of federal funding for the Department of Justice COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) Hiring Program (CHP). Brindisi's initiative aims to recruit, hire, train, and fund more community beat cops on the streets of NY-22 and in communities across the country.
