U.S. Senator David Perdue (R-GA) today announced that Georgia will receive a $22 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to widen State Route 96 in Twiggs County.

The project will expand State Route 96 from two lanes to four lanes and add a grass median on approximately seven miles between I-16 and SR 87/US 23/US 129.

"As a transportation hub, Georgia is constantly looking for innovative ways to improve safety and efficiency on our roadways," said Senator David Perdue. "This grant funding is a direct result of Georgia's efforts to invest in and enhance our infrastructure so we remain the best state in the country in which to do business. Additionally, it will help our state prepare for increased cargo traffic due to the deepening of the Port of Savannah, which is on track to be completed in 2022. I applaud Secretary Chao and the Trump Administration for continuing to make Georgia's infrastructure needs a priority."

"This Administration is making significant investments in infrastructure, and these BUILD grants will repair, rebuild, and revitalize transportation systems across America," said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao.

"The SR 96 Improvement Project improves a critical link within the state's transportation network connecting I-16 with I-75," said Russell McMurry, Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner. "This project will further improve the safe and efficient movement of people and goods. This grant will complete another section of this critical east west corridor which supports critical freight flow to and from the Port of Savannah, middle and west Georgia as well as Robins Air Force Base."

"The Department greatly appreciates Senator Perdue's efforts and strong support of this grant application to make it a reality," said Rudy Bowen, State Transportation Board Chairman. "The Department also appreciates Secretary Chao and U.S. DOT's continued focus on freight movement and infrastructure investment in rural America. This $22M grant made it possible to advance this project in middle Georgia."

The infrastructure funding was made available through USDOT's Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program.
