Maloney Votes to Support the Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act

Statement

Washington, DC - Today, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) helped pass the Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act, a legislative package that will create new jobs, invest in carbon pollution-reducing technologies and bolster renewable energy projects. The bill also addresses the disproportionate impact of climate change on underserved and rural communities, and supports energy grid resiliency projects.

"As we work to rebuild and grow our economy, our focus needs to be on green energy and infrastructure projects that provide the jobs and development we need in communities across the country. This bill is full of innovative policies that will create good-paying jobs while investing in clean energy production, strengthening our power grid, and helping businesses transition to green technologies. Communities across America face record-breaking pandemic-related unemployment. This bill will help create new, good-paying jobs in green technologies and industries, and support skills and trades training programs through the Department of Energy. This program will partner with nonprofits training workers in the construction and installation of energy-efficient building technologies.

The Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act will:

Create jobs:

This bill creates career skills programs and supports partnerships with nonprofits working to train or retrain workers in the construction and installation of energy-efficient building technologies.
This bill authorizes programs to support incubators that accelerate the commercial application of clean energy technologies by providing support, workspaces, and business education to startups and small businesses.
This bill promotes wind, solar and geothermal energy projects on public lands by creating priority areas for development and gives the Department of the Interior more tools to speed up permitting and begin work on the projects.
Update the electric grid and make our power sources more resilient:

This bill will direct the Department of Energy to establish a program supporting projects that improve resiliency, performance, and efficiency of the electricity grid against the effects of climate change.
This program can support partnerships at several entities, including state and local governments, a national laboratory, or a college or university.
Help businesses transition to green energy:

This bill will strengthen energy efficiency requirements and pave the way for research and development of solar, wind, and geothermal energy production, which will drastically reduce carbon pollution.
Investing in these renewable energy sources will help put America on the path toward achieving net-zero pollution by 2050 at the latest.
Bring green energy projects to rural America:

This bill will provide grants and technical assistance to rural electric cooperatives and nonprofits to assist with designing new energy storage and micro-grid projects that utilize energy from renewable energy resources.
Invest in clean energy transportation:

This bill will reauthorize the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) clean school bus program, awarding grants, rebates, or low-cost loans to replace school buses with low-to-zero emission school buses.
It will also direct the Secretary of Energy to carry out a Clean Cities Coalition Program, which will connect communities with resources to transition transit and other public amenities to clean energy sources.
