Issue Position: Working Together to Confront COVID-19

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

Our country is experiencing an unprecedented crisis that is impacting the lives of every American and has exacted a heartbreaking toll on our families, small businesses, and communities. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chris has fought to secure the resources that our state and local governments and health systems need to combat the virus and keep Granite Staters healthy and safe. And as New Hampshire grapples with the deepest economic downturn in decades, Chris is working with members of both parties to strengthen federal aid for our state's struggling Main Street economy.

Chris helped to bring Democrats and Republicans in Congress together to pass bipartisan relief packages that covered the cost of coronavirus testing, funded critical research, provided aid to New Hampshire hospitals and community health centers, supported our workers, and provided critical relief to small businesses.

He is also fighting for affordable coverage of COVID-19 treatment and vaccination and to ensure that workers can keep their health insurance if their employer is forced to shut down.

Chris is working with his colleagues to confront the economic crisis by:

Supporting enhanced unemployment benefits to help the record number of Granite Staters out of work through no fault of their own meet basic household expenses

Establishing the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which has provided over $1 billion in critical support to over 23,000 Granite State small businesses and nonprofits in this district, protecting more than 120,000 jobs

Expanding tax credits for small businesses to help prevent additional layoffs, including authoring a provision that would allow businesses receiving a PPP loan to also claim the Employee Retention Tax Credit

Expanding federal tax deductions for charitable donations to support nonprofits that have been impacted by decreased donations, fewer available volunteers, and canceled fundraisers in the wake of the coronavirus crisis
