Udall Statement on Court Ruling Removing William Perry Pendley as Leader of Bureau of Land Management

Press Release

Date: Sept. 25, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.), ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies, issued the following statement after a federal judge blocked William Perry Pendley from continuing to lead the Bureau of Land Management in an acting, unconfirmed capacity:

"William Perry Pendley has no business--and no authority--leading the Bureau of Land Management, and Secretary Bernhardt should have known better. Finally, Americans throughout the West and throughout the country can look forward to this anti-public lands, anti-Native zealot being shown the door. This ruling is a win for all who value the rule of law, Tribal sovereignty, and conservation. Any decision Pendley has made in this capacity must now be subject to legal scrutiny as well."
