Rep. Richmond Mourns the Passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) issued the following statement on the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

"Justice Ginsburg is regarded as one of the most brilliant legal minds in our nation's history. We will forever be indebted to her for showing a steadfast commitment to women's rights, civil rights, and voting rights. A trailblazer in her own right, Justice Ginsburg was integral to our pursuit of a more perfect union.

"Only the second woman Supreme Court Justice at the time of her confirmation, she understood and practiced perseverance from the moment she was sworn onto the bench by President Bill Clinton. During her time on the Court, Justice Ginsburg said that the three most damaging decisions the court made were Shelby County v. Holder, Rucho v. Common Cause, and Citizens United v. FEC. Justice Ginsburg, like all great civil rights pioneers, knew that the right to vote is the power that drives all rights. In her dissent for Shelby County, Ginsburg famously wrote that gutting the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was "like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet.'

"As a lawyer myself, I have always revered Justice Ginsberg for her tenacity, grit, and intellect. Her passing could not have come at a more vulnerable time for our country. As we collectively mourn her passing, let us honor her legacy by ensuring her fight for equality and justice endures. I send my sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all those who loved and admired her."
