Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's decision to suspend recent operational changes that have caused mail delays and concerns about the ability of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to collect and deliver election mail:

"This a good first step, but not nearly enough. New Mexicans rely on the U.S. Postal Service to get their prescriptions and other life-saving mail whether it's an election year or not. These recent operational changes, including the removal of essential equipment and banning extra trips by postal carriers, also threaten the timely processing of election mail ahead of an election that will rely more on vote-by-mail than previous years. Congress must stand fully behind the Postal Service and demand the Trump administration permanently reverse the damage they have done, and pass legislation to stop any further attempts to dismantle this invaluable service and brazenly hinder our elections. The upcoming hearings with the Postmaster General answering detailed questions are a welcome development, during which Mr. DeJoy needs to commit to reverse these policy changes for good--not just delay them until it is more politically convenient. I will continue to work with other members of Congress to provide diligent oversight on this important issue."
