Klobuchar, Smith Announce over $25 Million in Funding for Housing in Minnesota

U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded Minnesota over $25 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to help low-income families and Minnesota's most vulnerable citizens, with a focus on households facing a higher risk of eviction.

"As Minnesotans continue to deal with the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, it is more important than ever to ensure that all residents have access to safe and affordable housing," Klobuchar said. "This grant funding will help meet the needs of our state's most vulnerable populations and ensure that those facing eviction have the resources they need to get through this difficult time. I will continue working to ensure that safe and stable housing is available for all families in Minnesota."

"We need to put real dollars into helping prevent, prepare for and respond to COVID-19 in Minnesota," Smith said. "And that's exactly what this Community Development Block Grant does. It will provide housing support to low- and moderate-income families to help make ends meet during this time of economic stress. It will also invest in a host of additional efforts that support economic growth, community revitalization and affordable housing across the state."

This is the third distribution of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding as provided by the CARES Act. Nationwide, the CARES Act provided $5 billion in supplemental CDBG funding to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the coronavirus. HUD previously announced the first $2 billion in CARES Act CDBG funding and the second tranche of $1 billion, which was required to be allocated just to state and insular area governments.
