Statement

Date: Sept. 21, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Today,Representative Marcia Fudge (OH-11) issued the following statement after House passage of H.R. 5309, the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (C.R.O.W.N.) Act:

"I was proud to introduce the C.R.O.W.N. Act with my good friends and colleagues Congresswomen Ayanna Pressley and Barbara Lee, as well as Congressman Cedric Richmond," said Rep. Fudge. "Too often African Americans are required to meet unreasonable standards of grooming in the workplace and in the classroom with respect to our hair. The C.R.O.W.N. Act follows the lead of seven states that have enacted laws prohibiting racial hair discrimination by federally banning the practice. Today's passage represents an important step toward ensuring African Americans everywhere no longer have to be afraid to show up for work or the classroom as anything other than who they are."
