Issues: Abortion

House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement regarding President Trump's executive order protecting born-alive abortion survivors:

"I strongly applaud President Trump's executive order taking further decisive action to protect life. In Congress, I've worked tirelessly with both Republicans and Democrats to get a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. While Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to block this life-saving legislation, President Trump has taken action, using his authority to ensure that the federal government prioritizes neonatal research, enforces legal protections for babies who are born alive, and strengthens notification and reporting requirements for hospitals. While Congress still has a moral imperative to protect all born-alive infants from discrimination by passing the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, President Trump's actions are a strong step in ensuring that the federal government protects the most vulnerable American lives."

In 2019, Scalise, along with Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-Mo.), introduced a discharge petition to force a vote in Congress on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, and continue to push for this critical legislation to come to the House Floor for a vote.
