Abraham Requests Expansion of Federal Assistance to Hurricane Laura Survivors in 5th Congressional District

Date: Sept. 1, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

ALTO, LA - On Tuesday, Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., R-Alto, released the following statement asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to expand individual and public assistance programs to eligible parishes in the 5th district that were impacted by Hurricane Laura.

"I was in Lake Charles when the Hurricane hit and followed it up through my district as it passed. I've witnessed the devastation firsthand and know the incredible level of damage Laura left in its wake. Louisianans are strong and resolute, and we will repair and rebuild. FEMA, along with GOHSEP have been doing a tremendous job in incredibly trying times and I thank them for their hard work and dedication.

This morning FEMA added Ouachita Parish to the list of parishes whose residents are eligible for FEMA direct individual assistance. I thank FEMA for acting quickly, and request that they expeditiously add all other parishes that qualify, including Winn, Rapides, Grant, LaSalle, Lincoln, and others in the 5th District that were affected by this disaster. The damage from Hurricane Laura throughout the 5th district has been devastating, and we must ensure our communities and citizens quickly get the aid they need."

FEMA has designated nine parishes eligible for individual disaster assistance and is currently working across the state with GOHSEP and parish officials to conduct damage assessments and make additional communities eligible.
