Location: Olympia, WA

Congressman Denny Heck (WA-10) released the following statement after learning about the death of former U.S. Senator Slade Gorton:

"Slade Gorton did things in pairs. He served in both the Army and the Air Force, a feat I admire, representing a joint Army-Air Force base. At different points in his career, he held both of Washington's seats in the U.S. Senate, a testament to his drive and determination. And, from my perspective, he embodied both different beliefs and shared humanity.

"I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to interview Slade in 2002. It was a conversation I will always remember, from the moment the interview began until his final comment that his longest lasting legacy was the staff he worked with and the things he hoped they would go on to accomplish.

"I send my deepest condolences to his family, his friends, and the many others who were fortunate to know him. Washington state lost a giant today."
