Rep. Estes Votes Against $25 Billion USPS Bailout Bill

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas) released the following statement after voting no on a USPS bailout bill. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Members back to vote on this legislation after shortening the House schedule and ignoring other, more critical legislation to address unemployment benefits and COVID-19-related needs.

"Americans have relied on the Postal Service since the beginning of our country. This has been true even as usage has declined over the previous 25 to 30 years with the advent of email and other digital communication trends that have only increased operational challenges," said Rep. Estes. "Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi and Democrats have manufactured a crisis for political gain, but now is not the time to play politics with a hastily drafted bill full of wish list items marketed as COVID-19-relief legislation. We need to continue looking at ways to make the Postal Service more efficient and reliable for years to come, but now is not the time to politicize this agency and add to public concerns."

H.R. 8015 passed the House 257 to 150. The U.S. Postmaster General has already assured voters that he is maintaining consistent services through the election, even as they continue to look for ways to improve operations. The USPS Board of Governors additionally announced the formation of a bipartisan Election Mail Committee.

Ron Estes is a 5th generation Kansan and represents Kansas' 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means.
