Hoyer Statement on Labor Day

Statement

Date: Sept. 7, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Labor Day:

"On Labor Day, we celebrate the contributions of America's working men and women and their families. Throughout our history, working people have put their labor and talents into building a more prosperous country, strong communities, and a vibrant democracy. Our nation was founded on the premise that hard work ought to lead to opportunities to get ahead and achieve the American Dream.

"Today, millions of American workers and their families are struggling. The Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress have been working for years to erode the victories of the workers" rights movement, and the uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic has only added to the economic insecurity working families are facing. This Labor Day comes at a precarious moment for the working people of America.

"House Democrats have spent the past two years defending working people and promoting policies that help America's workers continue to reach for opportunities. From passing legislation to raise wages to advancing the PRO Act to safeguard workers' rights, from defending the Affordable Care Act to passing bills to make child care more affordable for working families, we are doing our jobs on behalf of the millions who are working hard at their jobs. Now, as we face this pandemic together, we must pursue policies that enable our country to build back better by harnessing the productivity and talents of American workers.

"As we celebrate together today, I join in thanking the workers of America and our nation's labor movement for making this country strong. Together, led by our workers, we can keep it strong and build it stronger still."
