Congressman Gonzalez Introduces Bipartisan Bill in the House to Provide Targeted Funding to USPS Alongside Provisions for Much Needed Long-Term Reforms

U.S. Congressman Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH) introduced the companion legislation to the bipartisan Postal Service Emergency Assistance Act in the U.S. House of Representatives today alongside Reps. Jared Golden (D-ME), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX). This bill would provide targeted funding to the United States Postal Service (USPS) to make up for the losses at the USPS due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, it would take steps towards securing the future of the USPS by requiring the Postmaster General and Board of Governors to transmit to Congress a plan to ensure the long-term solvency of this important American institution.

"The United States Postal Service plays a vital role in the lives of all Americans. Like all other aspects of our daily lives, the USPS has been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic," said Congressman Gonzalez. "This bipartisan legislation has strong support in the U.S. Senate and strikes the right balance of additional funding for the USPS while recognizing that the Postal Service has underlying financial challenges. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever that we come together across the aisle to solve problems. This is the companion bill to legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate by Maine Senator Susan Collins. The Postal Service Emergency Assistance Act is supported by the American Postal Workers Union, Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service, National Active and Retired Federal Employees, National Association of Postal Supervisors, National Postal Mail Handlers Union, National Rural Letter Carriers' Association, the Package Coalition, the PRINTING United Alliance, and United Postmasters and Managers of America.
