Governor Schwarzenegger's Statement in Recognition of Martin Luther King Day

Proclamation

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued the following statement today to commemorate Martin Luther King Day:

"Next week we celebrate the life of a giant among the heroes of this nation, a man who embodied the American spirit and ennobled the world.

Images of the Governor"In every generation, there are a singular few with the courage, the strength and the willingness to give up everything in pursuit of their dream. Martin Luther King was one of those singular people and his dream of justice, harmony and equality moved an entire nation.

"Dr. King called segregation and civil rights to the forefront of America's conscience. His greatness lay not only in his refusal to accept the status quo but in his rejection of violence as a tool to achieve his goals. Dr. King spoke to this country in words that touched its heart, words that spoke not of anger and hatred but of his vision for a better future, a more just society and a world where Christian values are a way of life.

"One can only imagine how our nation and our world would be different today had he not been taken from us. But on Monday, we will remember him with deep gratitude for his sacrifice, his wisdom, and his perseverance in bringing this nation into the light."
