Gardner Leads Bill to Protect Pre-existing Conditions

U.S. Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) introduced the Pre-Existing Conditions Protection Act, legislation that would guarantee coverage protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions.

"My bill is simple -- it guarantees coverage for people who have pre-existing medical conditions and ensures that people cannot be charged more because of a pre-existing condition," said Senator Gardner. "I will continue to fight for pre-existing condition protections as well as measures to lower health care costs, strengthen innovation, and expand access for all Coloradans, including those with pre-existing medical conditions."

Gardner has worked to protect pre-existing conditions, lower costs, and increase quality of care for Coloradans:

Throughout his time in Congress, Gardner has strongly supported coverage protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
Gardner strongly supports medical research funding and has fought for robust investments. Since he has served in the U.S. Senate, the National Institutes of Health funding has increased approximately 30 percent.
Gardner secured a repeal of the costly Health Insurance Tax (HIT) in December 2019 to lower health care coverage costs for nearly 142 million Americans.
In October 2019, Gardner applauded the announcement that health insurance premiums would drop an average of 20.2 percent on Colorado's individual market, due to thereinsurance waiver Gardner helped secure for the state with Governor Polis.
In July 2019, Colorado's application for a State Innovation waiver was approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services after Gardner strongly supported this effort.
Gardner introduced the bipartisan Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act in July 2019, which would help save lives and improve the health of newborn babies.
Gardner's bill to lower prescription costs and increase competition in the prescription drug marketplace passed the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) in June 2019.
Gardner was awarded the Children's Hospital Association's "Champion for Children's Health" award in June 2019 for his work to make patient-centered, pediatric-focused care available to more children with pre-existing complex medical conditions.
Gardner helped introduce the Disability Integration Act in January 2019, which affirms the right of people with disabilities and seniors to live in freedom rather than be forced into unwanted institutionalization.
In December 2018, Senator Gardner fought for a long-term reauthorization of the Children's Health Insurance Program and was able to secure six years, the longest in the program's history.
Gardner was an original cosponsor of the RACE for Children Act in February 2017, which was signed into law as part of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 to strengthen innovation and improve access for pediatric cancer treatments.
