Congressman Cohen Celebrates 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), who contracted polio in his youth and has long been familiar with the needs of disabled people, today released a statement celebrating Sunday's 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

"I have long supported the Americans with Disabilities Act that has opened vistas of opportunity to so many people over the last 30 years. I was a cosponsor of the state ADA when I was a Tennessee state senator in the '90s and have been a strong supporter as a Congressman. Having experienced polio as a child, I became well acquainted with disabilities and the need for adaptation from an early age. The ADA has touched and improved countless lives over the last 30 years, and I celebrate this important legislative milestone with all those it has affected."

The ADA is an important civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.
