Suffolk County Receives Additional $26.7 Million in Federal Coronavirus Funding for Public Transportation

Today, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), member of the bipartisan Congressional Coronavirus Task Force and bipartisan White House Opening Up America Again Congressional Group, announced Suffolk County received an additional $26,629,337 in federal funding through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) Act.

This additional funding for public transportation, provided through Section 5307 of the CARES Act at 100% federal cost, may be used to support capital, operating and other expenses to prevent, prepare for and respond to COVID-19 and reimburse transit operating expenses incurred beginning on January 20, 2020.

These funds come on the heels of $257 million in federal funding previously provided to the Suffolk County government in the CARES Act for coronavirus related expenses as well as additional federal funding delivered to New York's First Congressional District through other funds, including our communities' hardest hit hospitals, businesses and others.

"As one of the first and hardest hit areas by coronavirus, Long Island's local governments have been on the frontlines every step of the way," said Congressman Zeldin. "Despite historic, enhanced budgetary shortfalls as a result of coronavirus, they have continued to provide vital services like public transportation. This additional federal funding will go a long way in offsetting these operating costs and help ensure they can continue to provide these important services to Long Islanders."
