Issues: Defense

Today, ahead of passage of the bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26) touted major wins for our U.S. servicemembers, national security, and South Florida.

"I'm proud to vote in favor of the bipartisan defense authorization, which gives our brave servicemembers on the frontlines of this pandemic and across the globe a well-deserved raise, while taking steps to make America safer and stronger," said Mucarsel-Powell. "In South Florida, we know that our servicemembers sacrifice so much for us, and they deserve to be properly compensated. This bill improves our Coast Guard's readiness and ensures that we are standing with Venezuelans yearning for democracy. To Floridians serving in our military: thank you for your service. I will continue to advocate for the well-being of America's heroes."

The legislation expected to pass later today includes:

A 3% pay increase for military servicemembers;
Mucarsel-Powell's legislation to reduce and better manage the serious maintenance backlog for Coast Guard shore infrastructure projects that will increase readiness and resiliency; and
A bipartisan amendment led by Mucarsel-Powell and other Florida members to require more transparency from the administration on the crisis in Venezuela.

Full and short summaries of the NDAA have been prepared by the House Armed Services Committee.
