Congressman Ben McAdams' language to prohibit spending on explosive nuclear weapons testing is included in an annual spending bill approved by a House committee today. The prohibition is included in the Energy and Water Appropriations bill for the budget year beginning October 1st.

Earlier this month, McAdams wrote to House leaders, including the chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water, as they met to consider next year's spending bills.

"For generations, Utahns have experienced higher rates of cancer and other serious medical conditions due to harmful radiation exposure, leading to thousands of premature deaths. I believe it is imperative that the Energy and Water Subcommittee prohibit additional explosive nuclear testing on U.S. soil and prevent additional harm to our citizens," said McAdams' letter.

McAdams said that the Trump Administration recently announced plans to resume explosive nuclear weapons tests, despite the ongoing certification of the safety, security and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. McAdams said he is "doubling down" on stopping the funding in multiple spending and authorization bills moving through Congress.
