Issue Position: Health Care

Issue Position

The Legislature made small gains in health care during the 86th Session. As a result of several new laws, there will be more transparency in billing and no surprise billing, drug costs will be kept in check, and low-income women will be notified they may be able to access post-partum health care through the Healthy Texas Women Program once their Medicaid for Pregnant Women expires.

There are still too many uninsured Texans, and Texas is still not taking advantage of expanding Medicaid to bring our federal tax dollars back home. COVID-19 has had a huge impact on our health care system. Tying health insurance to employers is a system that has led to even more uninsured Texans as a result of recent layoffs. My goals for next session include:

* Expand Medicaid to provide more health care to more people, including therapies for children with disabilities and mental health treatments.
* Put women in charge of their own health, in consultation with their physicians.
* Provide funding for community clinics, including those that provide abortion care and other women's health services, that serve underserved populations.
* Ensure everyone has access to affordable health care.
