Burgess: EU Court Ruling Puts American Livelihoods at Risk

Statement

Date: July 16, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), a member of the House Rules Committee and Republican Leader of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, released the following statement after the European Union Court of Justice ruled against the U.S. - EU Privacy Shield.

"Striking down the U.S. -- EU Privacy Shield puts in jeopardy over 5,000 American companies doing business in Europe," said Burgess. "The Privacy Shield allowed cross-border data flows based on privacy and data protection requirements. This is the second time this type of agreement has been challenged in the European Court of Justice, subjecting American businesses to Europe's privacy laws. The General Data Protection Regulation that went into effect in 2018 is not perfect and should not be the standard on which Americans place their livelihoods. Now is the time for Congress to get back to work to negotiate a federal privacy law that will help set forth principles for a future data sharing agreement. Europe is an ally and a partner and we cannot let continuous court challenges disrupt that relationship."
