Cubin Calls For Tough Border Enforcement

Immigration Reform Press Conference Focuses on Border Security

Washington -- U.S. Representative Barbara Cubin (R-WY) said today that pending border security legislation in the U.S. House is a good fist step but that much more must be done to truly secure the borders and cut illegal immigration.

"I'm disappointed the bill doesn't call for the construction of more fences and barriers," said Cubin. "I would also like to see more federal coordination with local authorities, who are most affected by the problem but don't have the resources or expertise to deal with it. This bill has a lot of good in it but it's just a first step. I'll continue to push for stronger reforms as the process continues."

The House is expected to consider the border security legislation next week. The bill cracks down on illegal employment and those who make a living smuggling illegal aliens. It also closes loopholes in the legal system that allow criminal and even terrorist aliens out on American streets.

Cubin cited recent press reports indicating that Wyoming could see an influx in illegal aliens because of the growing energy and construction industries in the state. She also reaffirmed her strong opposition to any amnesty plan for illegal aliens - no matter what name amnesty is under.

"Amnesty, no matter what you call it, is unacceptable," said Cubin. "If you take an illegal alien, and make him legal, that's amnesty and I can't support it."

Cubin attended a press conference today in the U.S. Capitol with about 20 members of the House Immigration Reform Caucus about the bill. The caucus is chaired by U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO).

"We are a nation of immigrants," said Cubin. "Immigrants built America, and legal immigration will keep us moving forward. But illegal immigration tears at the fabric of our nation."

"The House of Representatives owes it to the American people to send a tough enforcement measure to the Senate."

The immigration bill scheduled for consideration next week is H.R. 4437, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act.
