Issue Position: Fight for Criminal Justice Reform

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

Crime prevention, public policing, access to mental health and addiction services, fair penalties, and the rehabilitation of convicted persons are policies that best serve public safety. Restorative justice requires an end to racial profiling, mass incarceration, and the death penalty. Black lives matter, and additional resources should be made available for police to address cultural competency, improve the juvenile just system, and develop strategies to assist people with mental illness and other cognitive impairments, and end the school to prison pipeline. Common sense laws that keep guns out of the hands of children, the mentally ill and criminals--including a ban on assault weapons, improved background checks, and enhanced gun storage laws--serve public safety as well.

This session I supported both the "safe storage" and the reporting of lost and stolen firearms. I have formed a close working relationship with the members of the legislature who have been fighting the longest for these reforms and look forward to advancing such legislation next session.
