U.S. Senator Ben Sasse issued the following statement on the death of Congressman John Lewis, a hero of the civil rights movement who was beaten by Alabama state troopers in the Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965.

"John Lewis is an American hero. America is a cause to advance the truth of universal human dignity. John Lewis risked his life for that truth and his courage created a more perfect union. Our country is forever grateful."
