Aguilar Announces Federal Funding for San Bernardino Railroad Safety

Today, Rep. Pete Aguilar announced that the San Bernardino Police Department received $80,000 from the US Department of Transportation Federal Railway Administration. The funding will allow the department to increase education and enforcement efforts around railway trespassing with the goal of reducing the high death rate associated with railway trespassing in the San Bernardino area.

"This funding will help us make our community safer by preventing future accidents, injuries and tragic deaths on our region's railways. As a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees the Department of Transportation, I'll continue to advocate for federal grant programs to keep Inland Empire residents safe," said Aguilar.

"The city of San Bernardino has more than 30 miles of federally regulated railroad tracks. The police department will use this grant to fund a project dedicated to protecting the community from injury or death related to railway trespassing. The department will achieve this by enforcing trespassing laws and educating the community to the dangers of trespassing on the railways," said Chief Eric McBride of the San Bernardino Police Department.

Rep. Aguilar serves as the Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Committee and as a member of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Subcommittee, the subcommittee responsible for allocating funding the Department of Transportation.
