West's Statement on Cornyn's Refusal to Rename Federal Bases Named After Confederate Generals

Statement

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

"This is the kind of logic you would expect from someone whose first foray into the policial world was as a vocal supporter of George Wallace for President. Around the same time I was helping integrate my high school, John Cornyn was supporting the man who famously said, "Segregation Now, Segregation Forever.' It doesn't seem Senator Cornyn's views have changed much since 1968.

How would you feel if you were a young African American man or woman--or ethnic minority of any kind--and you were inducted into the military, swore that oath to defend your country with your life, and walked onto a base named after a general who literally took up arms to keep black people enslaved? What does that say to you about how you are valued as a human being by the government you are willing to lay down your life for?

Senator, please step into the 21st Century and finally denounce the pseudo-historical narrative of the Lost Cause. The Civil War ended in 1865, and the Union won. If you need further verification of this, please examine the paycheck you receive each month. Unless it says it is from the Confederate States of America, you serve the UNITED States of America. Let this go, Senator. Let it go. Please let America move forward after 155 years."
