Press Release

Date: July 20, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03), Vice-Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), issued the followed statement on the passing of U.S. Congressman John Lewis (GA-05):

"I am saddened by the passing of civil rights giant, the "Conscience of the Congress,' and my friend and colleague, Congressman John Lewis.

Although America has lost a national treasure and the world one of its greatest fighters and defenders of freedom and justice, Congressman Lewis' work, words of wisdom, and legacy will live on forever.

He reminded us that a threat of injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. In that spirit, we must keep fighting for social justice, voting rights, quality education, affordable healthcare, and economic empowerment for every soul; and we must "never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.'

Rest in power my friend."
