Collins Statement on Georgia Attorney General Asking GBI to Investigate Paul Howard's Use of Grand Jury Subpoenas

Date: July 10, 2020
Location: Atlanta, GA

Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) released the following statement in response to reports that Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to expand the scope of its investigation into District Attorney Paul Howard to include his use of grand jury subpoenas issued in the case of Rayshard Brooks.

"I'm glad to see Attorney General Chris Carr has asked the GBI to look into Paul Howard's egregious abuse of power in the case of Rayshard Brooks. Paul Howard's issuance of grand jury subpoenas without a grand jury in place further reveals his political motives and raises serious legal concerns, reaching the level of a potential crime.

"As I've said for weeks, it's abundantly clear that Paul Howard isn't seeking justice in this case. He needs to be removed from his position immediately."

This week, Collins sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General William Barr requesting the Department of Justice immediately open an investigation into the egregious abuse of power Fulton County District Attorney (DA) Paul Howard has demonstrated in his handling of the Rayshard Brooks case.

When Howard first announced charges against the officers last month, Collins called on Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr to appoint an independent district attorney to ensure Georgians have complete confidence that this case is devoid of any and all political influence.
