Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today applauded the inclusion of H.R. 1400, the Horse Transportation Safety Act, in the Moving Forward Act, that passed the House today. Congressman Cohen has championed the measure since 2008. Congressman Cohen introduced H.R. 1400 last February with Representatives Dina Titus, Brian Fitzpatrick and Peter King. This bill has since amassed 128 other bipartisan cosponsors.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"Horses deserve to be transported in as humane a manner as possible. Double-deck trailers do not provide adequate headroom for adult horses, and accidents involving double-deck trailers are a horrendous reminder that the practice is also dangerous to the driving public. I'm pleased this important measure is included in HR. 2, the Moving Forward Act."

The bill is also endorsed by the following organizations: The Humane Society of the United States, The Humane Society Legislative Fund, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), Animal Wellness Action, Animal Wellness Foundation, National Black Farmers Association, Return to Freedom, The Center for a Humane Economy, National Humane Education Society, American Horse Protection Society, Horses for Life Foundation, American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHPC), Equine Welfare Alliance, Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA), Texas State Horse Council, Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), and Equine Collaborative International, Inc. (ECI).
