Rep. Payne, Jr.'s Statement on New Jersey's Redistricting Amendment

Statement

Date: July 10, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. released the following statement on New Jersey State Assembly Resolution 188. The resolution would extend the deadline for state officials to create the new state legislative districts because the coronavirus has delayed the U.S. Census count.

"Every state needs to conduct their redistricting fairly and effectively," said Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. "It is unfair to expect any state to be able to draft reliable districts when the coronavirus has disrupted the Census count on which it is based. I am pleased to see my friend, Assemblyman John McKeon, introduce this resolution to allow New Jersey the time it needs to redistrict accurately and hope it passes the State Assembly soon."
