Congressman Thompson's Statement on Changing the Mississippi State Flag

Statement

Date: June 30, 2020
Location: Washington, MS

Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), today released the following statement after Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves signed legislation that will remove the state flag adopted in 1894 and establish a commission to propose a new flag:

"All Mississippians should be proud today. Communities all across the state helped to make this day a reality. For years, there have been conversations between various groups demanding and protesting for a new flag. I commend the state legislature on doing what is right. Now the question is what else will we do? We can not stop at changing the flag. This is only a symbolic change. I hope we see this moment as an opportunity to address the systemic problems in our state."
