Rep. Spano Fighting for Small Businesses

Press Release

Date: July 2, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Ahead of the 4th of July weekend, Rep. Ross Spano (R-FL) closed out the legislative week with a series of wins for local small businesses and their employees. As the sole Florida Representative serving on the House Small Business Committee, Spano has ensured Small Business Administration (SBA) programs are available to local businesses to keep their doors open and employees on the payroll.

On Monday, Rep. Spano penned a letter to House leadership requesting an extension to the Paycheck Protection Program. The original deadline for taking applications was scheduled to end on June 30th, 2020. Spano wrote this letter during sustained negotiations with Senate colleagues to ensure this extension, and on Wednesday, both the Senate and House approved the measure. PPP will be extended through August the 8th, and the bill is on its way to President Trump for his signature. The Paycheck Protection Program has saved over 50+ Million American Jobs.

"I am fighting for small businesses across FL-15 and the folks that have poured their heart and soul into achieving the American dream." said Spano. "As a former small business owner, and having crisscrossed our district speaking with small businesses, I know the challenges they are facing. Local small business owners asked for this extension, so I fought for it, and have delivered. There is no doubt this extension will help more businesses stay open and keep employees on the payroll."

On Wednesday, Rep. Spano attended a Small Business Committee hearing entitled "The Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) Program: Status Update from the Administration'. Committee members conducted oversight on the SBA and debated what changes Congress can make to improve the delivery of the program. Over the last recent weeks, Spano's Lakeland and Brandon offices received complaints about EIDL implementation, so Rep. Spano was sure to bring this up to SBA representatives. Today, Rep. Spano continued fighting for FL-15 small businesses when the House Small Business Committee held a hearing entitled "Supply Chain Resiliency'. Industry experts testified about weaknesses in America's supply chains. COVID-19 has exposed our reliance on countries like China, and Spano's economic recovery plan, the "Great American Comeback', focuses on bringing back critical supply chains back to the United States which would both boost our economy and strengthen our national security.
