Rep. Spano Fights Against the Green New Deal

Press Release

Date: July 1, 2020
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Infrastructure

Today, U.S. Representative Ross Spano (R-FL) spoke and voted against H.R. 2, the "INVEST in America Act', the surface transportation bill proposed by House Democrats. The bill calls for more than $1.5 trillion dollars in spending.

"Coming out of committee, the bill had a $500 billion price tag, without anyway to pay for it. Democratic leadership has now added an extra $1 Trillion dollars to it," said Rep. Spano. "Forty percent of all the money in this package goes to Green New Deal priorities and fails to include deregulatory provisions that could easily stimulate the economy and make the government work for the American people, rather than against them."

H.R. 2, combines a 5-year surface transportation package, with approximately $1 trillion of miscellaneous Democrat priorities, including $25 billion dollars for the Postal Service, $70 billion for public housing repairs, and several multibillion-dollar authorizations supporting electric vehicle manufacturing and infrastructure--all of which would increase taxes for Americans.

On Monday, Democrats denied three common-sense amendments Rep. Spano submitted that would streamline the approval process for infrastructure projects. President Trump issued a Statement of Administrative Policy opposing H.R. 2, in part for "fail[ing] to tackle the issue of unnecessary permitting delays, which are one of the most significant impediments to improving our infrastructure."

Currently, major infrastructure projects need to be approved by multiple agencies, and on average take 3.7 to 5 years to complete. It is estimated that project delays are responsible for an estimated $3.7 trillion in lost employment and economic gains. The bill passed on a 233-188 vote.
